Norwegian Kringla Recipe
Grandma’s Norwegian Kringla Recipe
Ingredients
150 g butter (about 10 ½ tablespoons or 1 stick + 2 ½ tablespoons) – softened
2 tablespoons sugar (about 25 g)
4 tablespoons cream (about ¼ cup / 60 ml)
4 dl wheat flour (about 1 ⅔ cups / 200 g all-purpose flour)
For Garnish
1 egg white or a few tablespoons of water for brushing
Granulated sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
Preheat oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and creamy.
Add cream and flour: Stir in the cream. Gradually add the flour and knead gently until a smooth dough forms.
Shape the cookies: Divide the dough into pieces and roll each into long, thin ropes about ½ inch (1 cm) thick. Shape each rope into a pretzel form and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
Brush and sprinkle: Brush the tops lightly with egg white (or water) and sprinkle generously with granulated sugar.
Bake: Place the trays in the middle of the oven and bake for about 12 minutes or until the cookies are lightly golden at the edges.
Cool: Let the cookies cool on the tray for 2–3 minutes to set, then carefully transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
